The SARAH
Center
is open to
everyone — most of our clients are homeless, but not all. Some just
come in for supplies, like lotions, shampoos, or soaps. But most are
homeless and have nowhere else to meet these needs.
We try to help
as much as possible by offering showers, a place to do their
laundry, use of the phone for local calls or just to pick up their
mail. We at Project Understanding have been able to serve our
clients this past year with 8,235 showers, 1,597 loads of laundry,
1,362 phone calls, and 356 people have had the service of our mail
pickup.
This
past year the homeless population in Ventura has grown. The need of
organizations like Project Understanding is always there. Clients
that are looking for full-time work are finding it harder and
harder, and even if they do find work, most times it’s eight or nine
dollars an hour which is not enough to get them off the streets and
into an apartment or even a room to rent.
One
client that did get off the streets and into his own place found a
full-time job plus two part-time jobs just to get him where he is
today. So as you can see with salaries as low as they are and rent
so high, some people have to work seven days a week to get along in
Ventura.
Most
days we are busy from the time the doors open. I am blessed to have
two volunteers, Mariann Davis and Nita Perkins. Without them the
SARAH Center would not be able to do all it does.
